Urinary Tract Infection - Long Term Care Facilities

Released Date:

1/1/2015

Revised:

Title:

Diagnosis and Management of Urinary Tract Infection in Long Term Care Facilities

Description:

This guideline makes recommendations to increase the accuracy of diagnosis, reduce inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics for asymptomatic bacteriuria, optimize antibiotic therapy, testing and use of lab services. Diagnosis of UTI in older adults relies on clinical assessment not laboratory testing. Urine C&S is used to guide the selection of antibiotic therapy based on the Bugs & Drugs medication tables. Use of the UTI in LTCF checklist is recommended to ensure accurate communication of clinical findings between nursing and medical staff.

Target Population:

Older adults living in LTCF* (* LTCF is any congregate living environment for older or disabled persons who have high personal and professional care needs)

Exclusions:

The clinical principles apply in genereral to older adults regardless of where they reside. The UTI in LTCF checklist, however, is specifically designed for use in LTCF settings.
