This guideline is partially adapted from the Scientific Advisory Council of Osteoporosis Canda 2010 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Osteoporosis in Canada: Summary.

Key messages include:

Identify patients at high risk of fracture, not just low bone mineral density (BMD).
BMD should be used as a supporting tool only.
Assess and manage patients previously diagnosed with osteoporosis based on absoute risk of osteoporosis-related fractures.
Patients with past fragility fracture have a higher risk for future fractures.

Target Population:

All men and women 50 years of age and older
